A college’s wall calendar is drawing the ire of students and faculty members for what they say is an offensive portrayal of the military.
The Wall Calendar is a calendar used by all the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the university said in a statement Monday.
Its creators said it is intended to reflect the campus as a whole, and the university’s community, including faculty members and students, should have complete control over the calendar.
The university said that when students and other faculty are invited to sign up to receive the calendar, they will have the option to remove their names from it.
The calendar has sparked criticism from some faculty members who said it perpetuates the stereotype of soldiers, veterans and police officers as being “super heroes.”
The university said it did not want the students to see the calendar in a racist or derogatory manner.
